Start Conservatively to Stay Healthy
by Coach Eladio Valdez III
Runners have a tendency to jump full bore into a training schedule once it starts. However, this is akin to starting the first mile of a half marathon or marathon too fast which, as many of you have personally experienced, leads to bad and painful results. Treat each week like the mile of your race to pace yourself accordingly throughout the training (the only difference is that you’ll taper in the final 2-3 weeks to freshen up and peak on race day).
As a result, ease into the first few weeks of training. You should feel fully recovered from any spring training & racing. If not, take this time NOW for some necessary R&R. Otherwise, your risk of overtraining, burnout, or injury will be higher the rest of the way. If you feel great and are mentally excited, see how long you can stay there as the weeks begin to add up.
Click here to check out the complimentary training schedules I have created on the race website and you’ll notice the gradual buildup for each of the levels. Start smart and you’ll increase your chances for a productive training period and top notch race!
