Course Description
This year, the 5K course will be very fast while also taking in a nice tour of downtown. This will be a tale of 2 parts as the first mile is down followed by a long, very gradual uphill. Then, everyone will get to enjoy a long gradual downhill and flat 2nd and 3rd miles. Compared to many of our area courses, this will be one of the fastest and definitely among the most scenic.
It starts just north of Crown Center on Grand and heads north for over a mile to 11th Street, passing between the Sprint Center and KC Power & Light district. Turn right on 11th to Oak. *Be sure to pay attention to your turnoff since everyone else will turn left on 11th. The fun really begins as you’ll enjoy a nice long gradual downhill to 18th St passing by the Kansas City Star building along the way. On 18th you’ll head east for a pancake flat 1 kilometer out and back section while joining the final mile of the half marathon and marathon course by heading west and south to McGee, 20th and Grand. On Grand, you’ll have a just right three/tenths mile straightway that begins with a short climb over the bridge before a flat finish back to Crown Center. With just a few turns and long stretches of straight roads, it’ll be easy to settle into a good rhythm.
The Kansas City Marathon crowd was amazing! During the 5k, I felt the Kansas City love and the atmosphere really helped me in my last mile. I will definitely be back next year.
