Meet our 2011 Female Marathon Winner – Megan Earney

What’s your occupation? I teach band at Indian Woods Middle School.
When did you begin running? I’ve been a runner since high school but didn’t get serious about it until about 6 years ago.
What attracted you to the sport? I initially started running because it kept me in shape but now running competitively has allowed me to meet some really great people, given me a goal to work towards, and pushed me further than I ever imagined.
How many marathons have you run? This was my sixth marathon.
Have you ran the KC Marathon before? This is the fourth time running KC (07,08, 10, and 11)
What sets the Waddell & Reed KC Marathon apart from the rest? This marathon has an extremely challenging course. You also get to see a wide range of neighborhoods during the race. From the fountains on the plaza to the new downtown buildings, there’s something to see all along the course.
Describe what is it was like when you approached the final stretch/finish line? Relief! No one knows how beautiful a finish line is until they’ve run all 26.2 of those miles! Also, I have wanted to win this marathon for some time now, and it was nice to have had accomplished this goal.
What thoughts were going through your mind at the time? I also thought of my family and friends, who have been hugely supportive during my racing and training. There are so many more people who play a part in the marathon experience than just the runners. Each competitor has family, training partners and past coaches who have helped guide, teach and support them.
What advice do you have for other runners? Sometimes training for a big event like this seems so overwhelming. With those of us who work full time and train, almost every run has to be quality. I also think that consistent training is the key to a successful racing experience.

VOLUNTEERS
On behalf of the Kansas City Sports Commission and the Waddell & Reed Kansas City Marathon, we would like to thank all the volunteers for dedicating their time and energy to this year’s event. This year, over 1,300 volunteers registered online for duties ranging from late registration and packet pickup to course monitoring. It can’t be said enough - the Kansas City Marathon would not be possible without your assistance and we are truly grateful for your support. We hope that you enjoyed your experience and we encourage you to volunteer in the future. For more information, please email volunteer@kcmarathon.org
KIDS’ MARATHON
This year, over a thousand kids competed in our 4th Annual Kids’ Marathon – that’s 250 more than last year! The Kids’ Marathon is structured to allow participants the opportunity to complete a full, 26.2-mile marathon one mile at a time – a pace that is fun and safe for their growing bodies! As part of the fun run experience, participating kids were encouraged to “train” by tracking 25 miles on their own leading up to race day.
Congrats to all of our participants including our mascot division winners:
High School Division Winner: The Hornet from North Kansas City High School
Professional Division Winner: Scoopy from Culver’s Restaurants
FUNDRAISING
Every four minutes someone is diagnosed with a blood cancer, and every ten minutes someone dies of a blood cancer. Researchers funded by the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society are all over the nation working hard to find a cure and put an end to this terrible disease. The backbone of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is to raise funds to support our mission to find a cure.
On behalf of more than 957,902 American’s living with a blood cancer, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) would like to thank all the individuals that participated in the 2011 Waddell & Reed Kansas City Marathon. A portion of the funds raised through this event directly supports the LLS mission - to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. This year, we are pleased to announce that the marathon has helped generate over $15,000 for LLS, our official charitable partner.
If you or a loved one is currently battling a blood cancer, please contact the Mid-America Chapter at (913) 262-1515 or (800) 256-1075 for information and support.
